New York is known for its always fashionably dressed residents, so when I moved here I expected to see everyone dressed to the nines. However, coming from the west, where this is not the case for everyone, I started noticing mens fashion more than ever before. Now, coming from PDX I was used to seeing guys dressed in the hipster fashion, but I was surprised to see that this trend is extremely popular over here in NYC. This has made me re-examine hipster clothes for men. For a while I was confused, I thought of thrift store and vintage clothes as what a hipster would wear; that a hipster would do anything but follow what was trending. So how could hipster fashion be trending? I then made the distinction between a hipster way of life (ex: indie music, going green, biking everywhere) and hipster fashion. I also recently learned that the definition of a hipster is “a person who follows the latest trends and fashions.” So after figuring all of this out I started paying more attention to what men were wearing on the streets and also what was on the runways. I found two extremes; tailored/slim and preppy, or relaxed and hipster. I think having two opposites is great for guys because it gives lots of options. Tailored for work or a date (hint hint guys: a women loves a guy in a slim suit) and then relaxed for hanging out with friends in the evenings and on weekends. Some key features for the tailored preppy trend is slim (slim is most important…baggy is unattractive), skinny tie, oxford shoes, and maybe show a little fun and patterned sock. For the relaxed hipster trend: roll those pants (both chinos and jeans alike), button ups that are buttoned all the way up, raglan sleeves, ray bans, and a new trend arising is the baseball tee.

Fun read, Erinn! Waiting on a girl hipster post, even if it is like PDX 🙂
I’m glad you liked it!
